Zeughaus (Arsenal)
From 1637 to 1802, the current Zeughaus building complex was both a church and cloister for the Franciscans.
In 1699, the Franciscans opened a theological college here and took over the Jesuit grammar school. The building became the property of the city of Neuss in 1803.
During the 19th century, the Zeughaus was used as an arsenal – hence its name. After installing two further storeys, the sacral room was initially rented out to the Prussian state. A garrison stationed in Neuss used the nave as an arsenal during the years from 1826 to 1864. Later on, the building was used as a warehouse by several local businesses.
In 1923, the Zeughaus was converted into a theatre and concert hall with a stage and also a gallery for audiences.
The former cloister building next to the church housed a secondary school from 1803 to 1852, then the municipal and later the Royal grammar school. Following restructuring work in the year 1923, a restaurant was established here. And finally, between 1925 and 1944, the former cloister building became the centre of the Rhenanian City Theatre Association.
